Eric Reid sees what’s happening around him

Eric Reid called his shot months ago.

The 49ers safety said in December he anticipated teams shying away him in free agency because of his politics and his willing to speak about them.

I wouldn’t use the word concerned, Reid said then. I would say I understand that’s a possibility. And I’m completely fine with it. The things that I’ve done, I stand by, and I’ve done that for my own personal beliefs. Like I said, I’m fine with whatever outcome happens because of that.

And now that free agency is open (and nearly closed), the outspoken safety hasn’t heard a peep and he suspects he knows why.

But it hardly seems a coincidence that Reid’s phone isn’t ringing, and if it continues to not ring, he’ll know why.Jets announce signing of Teddy Bridgewater

Five days after it was first reported, the Jets made it official: They’ve signed Teddy Bridgewater.

The Jets announced that Bridgewater is now the fifth quarterback on their roster, joining Josh McCown, Bryce Petty, Christian Hackenberg and Joel Stave.

Given that the Jets traded up to the third overall pick with the intention of drafting their quarterback of the future, the Jets will soon have six quarterbacks. Half of them will be gone before the regular season.

After suffering a major knee injury in training camp, Bridgewater didn’t play at all in 2016 and played in only one game in 2017. If he’s healthy he has a chance at earning the Jets’ starting quarterback job in 2018, but the trade the Jets made yesterday virtually guarantees that Bridgewater won’t last more than a year with the Jets.

Bridgewater missed the entire 2016 season after suffering a serious knee injury in training camp, and he played only sparingly in one game in 2017. Whether he plays in 2018 remains to be seen, as he’s joining a very crowded quarterback room: The Jets have re-signed last year’s starter, Josh McCown, and they also have quarterbacks Christian Hackenberg, Bryce Petty and Joel Stave under contract. And, of course, Saturday’s trade with the Colts means the Jets are nearly certain to take a quarterback with the third overall pick in the draft.

So Bridgewater getting back onto the field in 2018 is no sure thing. But we’re told that he’s healthy enough to play, and he will be a Jet.

It appears there is a new contender in the running for top remaining free agent Ndamukong Suh . Suh told Yahoo Sports’ Jordan Schultz that the New York Jets have emerged as a ‘serious’ contender to obtain his services. While a visit to New York has yet to be scheduled, Schultz cites head coach Todd Bowles informing the defensive tackle of precisely how he envisions using him as a key factor in Suh’s interest. New York also reportedly offered the former Dolphin the most lucrative contract, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
